Editorial note from the FOODSECURE coordination team
Just before the summer break, when everyone will hopefully be able to enjoy a good rest from all the hard work, we would like to give you an update of the state of play of the FOODSECURE project. We can look back at a very good consortium meeting in Bratislava, hosted by Jan Prokivcak and Artan Qineti from the Slovakian Agricultural University. In a nice setting we have been taking stock of the work done so far – quite impressive – and have benefited from the views of the review board members on the results presented. Anyone who would like to listen to one or more presentations again can do so here: [FOODSECURE Playlist at youtube]. The power-point presentations can also be found on the FOODSECURE website (project files - please log in). The FOODSECURE project is well on track. A set of new journal and working papers has been published in the project - based on a large number of project deliverables, several with skillful suggestions for improvement from the review board. The papers span a wide number of topics. (Read more about publications [below]).
Project progress: Positive assessment from European Commission
The progress report for the second period (1 Sep 2013 to 31 Aug 2014) has been approved by the EC without any modification and the project officer, Mr Zoltan Krasznai, has given a positive assessment of the advancement of the project. With the project already in its third year, we have started to plan ‘the last mile’. Key activities in the coming months will be: finalising the modelling toolbox and running different scenarios with divergent policies, developing the “Navigator” and organizing the final conference.
The FOODSECURE Navigator
Based on rigorous analyses and stakeholder participation, the project aims to support stakeholders in the design of consistent, coherent, long-term FNS strategies. To get the scientific messages across, the NAVIGATOR will play a key role. A pilot of the NAVIGATOR was presented at the consortium meeting. Briefs will play a key-role in the Navigator. Briefs are short, easy-to-read summaries for non-specialists, to inform visitors of the website about the contents of a deliverable and/or work package. In addition, we aim to develop policy briefs for a number of selected themes that are of key interest to policy-makers within the EU.
Final conference
The final conference will be held in Brussels in the autumn of 2016. Preparations for this conference have started by ZEF and LEI in consultation with the EC. To ensure an effective dialogue at the science-policy interface, the conference will gather EC policy-makers at both senior and technical levels, stakeholders of the EC’s policies on food and nutrition and FOODSECURE researchers around selected policy statements. The policy messages in the final conference will draw on the briefs and policy briefs developed in the project.
European Development Days
Prior to the final conference, we intend to have a number of key-presentations and/or meetings with stakeholders at and outside the EC. The first one took place last 3-4 June during the European Development Days, when a so-called Brainstorming Lab was held with the help of INRA, KUL, Prospex, ZEF and LEI. During this Lab a ‘visioning session with youth and EDD stakeholders’ took place, to hear their ideas on improving food and nutrition security. The lab was quite successful and received a lot of attention (see the summary here or more below under [news]). Further events planned are the conference on "Global Food Security challenges" at the Expo in Milano on 7-8 August, as well as a debate on CAP and food security with the Irish Presidency of the EC in October. We will keep you posted on any sessions to be organized in Brussels and elsewhere.
We wish you an inspirational summer break.
Best regards,
Hans van Meijl, Petra Berkhout and Thom Achterbosch

EU-funding for new FNS projects
Several of the research teams in FOODSECURE have secured EU-funding to further explore food and nutrition in the European context, in relation to the global environment. The SUSFANS project, led by LEI Wageningen UR, will develop metrics, models and foresight for European diets and food systems that support nutrition and public health, the natural environment and enterprise in the EU agro-food and fishery sector (contact: susfans@wur.nl). The TRANSMANGO project, led by KU Leuven, aims to identify new transition pathways to improve food and nutrition security for Europe’s future.

FOODSECURE working papers
FOODSECURE working paper no. 33.
Cost-benefit framework for policy action to navigate food price spikes. By Matthias Kalkuhl, Mekbib Haile, Lukas Kornher and Marta Kozicka.
WP33 develops a cost-benefit framework for evaluating the impacts of price spikes and price volatility in food commodities. Several policies to reduce volatility or its adverse impacts (e.g. trade policies, stocks and safety net measures) are evaluated for their strengths and weaknesses.
FOODSECURE working paper no. 32.
The role of crop diversity in household production and food security in Uganda: A gender-differentiated analysis. By Katia Alejandra Covarrubias.
Based on data for Uganda, WP32 indicates that changes in crop diversity, measured in its different forms, can be powerful in contributing to higher or lower productivity for female-managed parcels. The important contribution of these parcels to household food security must be taken into account in policies that affect crop choice and the shift between mono- versus multi-cropping regimes.
FOODSECURE working paper no. 31.
Food and nutrition security in the European Union: Overview and case studies.
By Lara Cockx, Nathalie Francken and Hannah Pieters.
This Working Paper provides a detailed overview of food and nutrition security in the European Union and presents results from an original analysis of household survey data. They observe that the availability of fruits and vegetables is insufficient in the EU, in particular in several East-European member states. The relatively large share of food expenditure in total household budgets impedes access to food and signals economic vulnerability.
FOODSECURE working paper no. 30.
The impact of culture, religion and traditional knowledge on food and nutrition security in developing countries. By Elena Briones Alonso.
This WP reviews case study literature on the role of culture, religion and traditional knowledge as drivers of food and nutrition security in developing countries. The knowledge embedded in traditional food systems and traditional medicine can contribute to the improvement of food and nutrition security and public health, but is currently under-researched and underutilized.
